Why Double Letters Trip People Up

About 1 in 6 Wordle answers contains a repeated letter. That means roughly every week you'll face a puzzle where one letter appears twice — and if you're not expecting it, the tile colour feedback can be deeply confusing.

Here's what makes it hard: when a letter appears in your guess but the answer only has one copy of it, Wordle colours one tile yellow or green and the other one grey. Most players see a grey tile and immediately eliminate that letter — which is wrong when a double is involved.

The answer BELLE has two L's but your L in position 4 is yellow (right letter, wrong spot) and L in position 5 goes grey — NOT because L is absent, but because the answer only needs one more L and position 4 already claimed it. This is the confusing case.

The rule: A grey tile only means "this letter isn't needed here in addition to what's already confirmed." It never definitively eliminates a letter you've already gotten yellow or green.

How to Solve Double-Letter Wordles

Sign 1: You've tried "obvious" words and none fit

If you have 3-4 letters confirmed and the remaining words seem impossible, consider that the answer might use one of your confirmed letters twice. Rethink your word list with doubles in mind.

Sign 2: A yellow tile keeps refusing to land green

If a letter is yellow and you keep placing it in new positions and it stays yellow or goes grey, it might already be green somewhere AND appear again elsewhere. Consider whether the answer doubles up on that letter.

Sign 3: You're in guess 4 or 5 with too many options

Make a deliberate double-letter test guess. Pick a word that uses your confirmed letter twice in different positions to confirm or rule out the double.

💡 Strategy: Test the double early

If you suspect a double, use one of your guesses specifically to test it. For example if E is confirmed and you think it might appear twice, guess a word like WHEEL or STEEL to test both slots at once.
